چکیده

Several studies have shown that sediment associated black carbonaceous particles can reduce aqueous and bioaccumulated concentrations of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in benthic organisms. Therefore, carbon amendments (e.g. activated carbon, AC) have been studied as stabilization method for contaminated sediments. However, it appears that the amendments may have also direct adverse effects on organisms. Within this study the effects of carbon amendments (AC and biochar) on oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus were tested in field collected PCB contaminated sediments. Effects of carbon amendments on PCB bioaccumulation were measured and the potential adverse effects were studied by following egestion rate, growth and reproduction. AC dose related reduction in bioaccumulation was observed in all studied sediments, but the efficiency was sediment specific. Similarly, adverse effects were related to the AC dose. The ecological effects of biochar amendment were generally minor than those observed with AC, but biochar was also notably less effective in reducing bioaccumulation of PCBs. Sediment characteristics play an important role on both the stabilization capacity and potential adverse effects of carbon amendments and therefore sitespecific evaluation is particularly important when remediation measures are designed.

Ecological Uptake and Depuration of Carbon Nanotubes by Lumbriculus variegatus

BACKGROUND Carbon nanotubes represent a class of nanomaterials having broad application potentials and documented cellular uptake and ecotoxicological effects that raise the possibility that they may bioaccumulate in living organisms. OBJECTIVES Radioactively labeled nanotubes were synthesized using a novel methane chemical vapor deposition procedure. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), m...

Availability of polychlorinated biphenyls in field-contaminated sediment.

Two chemical approaches, Tenax extraction and matrix solid phase microextraction (matrix-SPME), were evaluated as surrogates to estimate bioavailability of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from field-contaminated sediment. Aroclor 1254 was the primary contaminant found in sediment from Crab Orchard Lake in Marion, Illinois, USA, and a total of 18 PCB congeners were selected for study. Bioaccumu...

Relevance of octanol-water distribution measurements to the potential ecological uptake of multi-walled carbon nanotubes.

Many potential applications of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) require various physicochemical modifications prior to use, suggesting that nanotubes having varied properties may pose risks in ecosystems. A means for estimating bioaccumulation potentials of variously modified CNTs for incorporation in predictive fate models would be highly valuable. An approach commonly used for sparingly soluble organi...

Effect of 3,4,3',4'-tetrachlorobiphenyl on the reworking behavior of Lumbriculus variegatus exposed to contaminated sediment.

The reworking response (bioturbation) of the oligochaete Lumbriculus variegatus was measured by following the burial rate and spread of a 137Cs marker layer translating worm activity into a biological burial rate (Wb) and a biological diffusion rate constant (Db) for surficial sediment mixing. Reworking was measured at 10 and 22 degrees C in two sediments: a reference site sediment dosed with 3...

Biological uptake of polychlorinated biphenyls by Macoma balthica from sediment amended with activated carbon.

This work characterizes the efficacy of activated carbon amendment in reducing polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) bioavailability to clams (Macoma balthica) from field-contaminated sediment (Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, San Francisco Bay, CA, USA). Test methods were developed for the use of clams to investigate the effects of sediment amendment on biological uptake. Sediment was mixed with activat...
